Smith the Roll-pack Review

Smith the Roll-pack Review

Smith the roll-pack, from the Millican ‘maverick’ range has a timeless aesthetic and a ‘less is more’ appeal.

Inspired by the landscape around Keswick, Millican founder Jorrit Jorritsma aimed for ‘proven utility… with modern functionality and sustainable materials.’ As a marker for the company’s values, Joritta and his business partner Nikky named the brand after a local legend, outdoor pioneer Millican Dalton, a 19th century cycle-camper, kayaker and mountain guide who turned his back on industrialisation to live in a cave in Borrowdale.

Although lightweight and minimal, these bags still feel sturdy and hill-ready. The unfussy design means there are fewer seams to let in water, fewer straps to catch on your spokes. The G-hooks are really easy to unclip, and made from anodized aluminium, so they’re not going to shatter.

There are some nice little details, the external zip pocket with internal key ring, handle at the top including a clip for your backlight. If you want easy access to your accessories, then go for the slightly larger Smith, which comes with side pockets to stash your water bottle or mint cake.

Note that the 15” laptop sleeve is exactly what it says – don’t count on squeezing your 17” screen into the pocket.

For Outdoor People, the big appeal of Millican is their commitment to sustainability. They use recycled polyester in their material, using plastic waste recovered from the ocean. The Smith range uses a waxed canvas blend, Millican’s own ‘bionic’ fabric, which, with the addition of 65% recycled polymer, is stronger than regular canvas, without losing its pleasing tactility. Most importantly, it’s waterproof. The inner lining is 100% recycled polyester – with a 75% lower carbon footprint than virgin polyester.

We love the fact that Millican also offer a repair service – so you can get maximum use out of your bag.

As with all waxed canvas products, to retain the waterproofing, you’ll need to reproof every couple of years Millican recommend using Nikwax wax cotton proof. Avoid cleaning with hot water or regular detergent, as this could damage the finish – just gently remove any dirt with a soft cloth.

Beautiful, functional, sustainable, perfect for the daily commute or a fell-walking weekend. Available in store and online, in seasonal colours, ember, slate grey and moss green.
