I take my Hive Pocket away with me every time I go away. It's a scaled-down version of the full version, so it's easier to stow in your luggage, but it's just as easy to learn and just as captivating. It's very cleverly designed and has won a host of geeky board games awards.
A little like chess, the aim of the game is to capture the opponents queen bee by using a variety of different pieces, all of which have different capabilities. Unlike chess, you don't need a board to play on: in this respect it's more like dominoes, the pieces in play make up the board.
Pocket Hive is the perfect companion for long train journeys or nights round the fire. It's designed for ages 9 and over, but 7 or 8-year-old games enthusiasts should be able to get to grips with the rules.
